At first the Nintendo Labo update, that lets you use one of the cardboard contraptions to control the game, seemed like a one-off but after that Nintendo EPD general manager Shinya Takahashi promised ‘further updates’. And he wasn’t lying.
Today’s free DLC is only minor but it changes Link’s outfit to the Champion’s Tunic from Zelda: Breath Of The Wild and offers up the Master Cycle Zero, from the game’s DLC, as a new ride.
There’s also new parts to customise any kart, with the ‘ancient tyres’ and a version of the paraglider from Breath Of The Wild.
Since Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was essentially a Wii U port, from before Breath Of The Wild (and certainly its DLC) was released none of this could’ve been available from the start. But why it’s taken till now to add it is a mystery.

Takahashi said ‘updates in the plural, so it’s not hard to imagine some of the other characters and karts may be updated to represent their most recent games, perhaps Super Mario Odyssey and Captain Toad amongst them.

As to why, and why now, the obvious guess is merely that Mario Kart is a consistent seller and Nintendo want to ensure it stays that way. It’s just as essential to anyone buying a new Switch now as it was at release and little extras like this help to make it seem fresh.
